The south of Italy, and Campania in particular, holds fascinating surprises of rare beauty, in addition to the monuments and beautiful landscapes for which it is known throughout the world.
Would you have ever imagined, for example, that between Rome and Naples there is a royal palace that has nothing to envy to that of Versailles?
And that in Naples there is a fascinating city beneath the city?
The HABI tour we present in this article will take you on a journey to discover these wonders. We set off from Rome in one of our comfortable vans to Caserta, a town in the northern part of Campania, just over the border into Lazio.
The journey takes about two hours. Once we arrive in the Caserta area, we immediately reach the famous Reggia. The Reggia of Caserta is a historic royal palace with an adjoining park. It was commissioned in the 18th century by Charles of Bourbon, King of Naples, and Sicily, and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli. The Reggia is the largest royal residence in the world. In 1997, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But the records of this wonderful residence do not end here. The palace was built with the intention of surpassing Versailles in beauty and magnificence. Inside there is a picture gallery and a collection of porcelain, as well as many frescoes, paintings and statues, the court theatre, a library, a sumptuous example of a Neapolitan nativity scene and a sumptuous chapel. The predominant style of the palace is late Baroque. The immense park of the palace deserves a special mention, rich in statues and fountains and divided into an Italian garden and an English garden.
Our chauffeur will park the car in the immediate vicinity of the Palace and will wait for you until you have completed your visit of this immense and marvellous monumental complex, for which you will have three hours. Immediately afterwards, the journey will continue to Naples. In the beautiful Neapolitan city, your driver will first take you to taste some of the most famous and delicious gastronomic specialities of the city. An opportunity not to be missed: Neapolitan gastronomy is world famous for its delicacy. There are many specialities that have made Neapolitan cuisine famous throughout the world. Pizza is of course one of the top items on this list, but there are also many other delicious and world-famous dishes of Neapolitan cuisine: spaghetti with seafood, gnocchi alla sorrentina, mixed fish fry, just to mention a few examples. Perhaps even more delicious and richer is the Neapolitan pastry: babà, sfogliatelle, zeppole…
Once you have had your fill of refreshments, it is off to discover Naples! We propose something incredibly special: a tour of underground Naples. The underground of Naples is in fact criss-crossed by a large network of tunnels, galleries, aqueducts, and spaces excavated and used throughout the history of the city from several centuries BC until a few years after the end of the Second World War, and which can still be visited, at least in part, today. They are not archaeological finds, as their origin has been underground since their construction. There are several routes to access the entire network of underground environments, alternating between cisterns and quarries, tunnels, and wells, remains from the Greco-Roman period and catacombs. There are many passages connecting various points in the city, even kilometres apart. To the present day, 900,000 m2 of underground cavities under the city of Naples are known, of which only two are of natural origin. It is a totally unique spectacle that will leave you literally speechless, for which you will have two hours at your disposal. If, however, you prefer to dedicate yourself to the surface beauty of Naples, there is no problem: your driver will be able to give you the best advice and take you to see the Neapolitan treasures that suit you best.
In this case, you will always have two hours to discover the most beautiful places in this fascinating city. The city is in fact a mine of monuments and quite different corners, in the largest historic centre in Europe. At the end of the visit to Naples, the tour draws to a close: on board our van, we depart for Rome.
This HABI tour includes motorway tolls, fuel, and parking. Additional hours are available at a cost of €45 each. If you intend to take advantage of the opportunity to visit underground Naples, you will need to say so in advance: you need to book well in advance. As for the rest, this tour is very flexible, able to adapt to your desires, always in total comfort. A unique opportunity to discover lesser-known corners than many others, but incredibly sumptuous and interesting! With the bonus of comfort, guaranteed, as always, by HABI!
